Light in the Darkness – Narrative Game Design

Faith has always shaped the way I view learning and decision making, so as I began working on my narrative game design, I wanted the theme to reflect my Catholic values.  Light in the Darkness draws on the scriptural idea that even small choices can move us closer to or further from God.  By putting players in everyday situations where they must choose between virtue and vice, the game creates space for reflection on what it means to live out one’s faith in action.

The proposed design of my game Light in the Darkness will be a meaningful process of weaving narrative with moral decision making.  The focus is on helping players recognize how daily choices between virtue and vice shape their path.  The story places the learner in situations where the easier option may be tempting, but the virtuous option is the one that leads to growth and light.

This project is still growing, but the process of sketching story maps, experimenting with branching choices, and reflecting her in this blog has helped me see how powerful narrative can be in guiding learners through moral questions.
